On behalf of Deeside Thistle Cycling Club (DTCC), we would like to welcome you and your family to the Youth section of the club, focused on riders aged 6-16. Our vision is to provide a safe, fun and social environment where young cyclists can develop their own talent, identify their own interests and achieve their own ambitions.

Coached sessions and activities are open to children aged 6-16yrs who are members of DTCC. Enrolment is continuous throughout the year, with intakes at the start of each school term. There is currently a membership list, and requests to join should, in the first instance, be directed to youth@deeside.org.

Fees for Youths are £20 per block, per child, payable at the beginning of each block. Fees are discounted for riders of parents/carers who Coach or assist with the Youth section, (at the discretion of the Lead Coach).

Child membership of DTCC is free for the first year (£7 annually thereafter). It is also recommended that at least one parent should join the club to keep informed regarding club activities, kit orders and similar useful information regularly circulated to members.

Most coached sessions are based out of Knockburn Sports Loch, Banchory, Aberdeenshire, on a weekly basis during school term time. Core sessions are offered on a Saturday between 09:00-12:00 for advanced riders and 10:00-11:00 for younger/developing riders. Additional sessions are provided at the Coaches discretion.

MTB sessions are provided at various locations including Scolty Woodlands and Shooting Greens, and run on Saturday Mornings from 10:00-12:00.

To begin with Youth riders concentrate on practicing and mastering foundation techniques and skills of cycling. This is based on continuous development and participation. Development is towards more advanced discipline specific activities and beyond, reflecting individual ability, interests and ambitions.

Participation in local / national racing events is an option, but not compulsory. Many of our riders take part as much for the social aspects and events that they enjoy as for the performance orientated ones.

Other events may be organised throughout the year depending on availability and interest, e.g. velodrome visits, trail centre rides, bike-packing trips, bike maintenance sessions, etc.

Our sessions are very popular and (depending on Coaching availability and rider demand) necessitate a waiting list. Please be aware that poor attendance could prevent other children on the waiting list from joining the Youths section.

We ask all parents or guardians to update our web app before sessions so we can plan coach allocation in advance .

The following attendance policy is applicable at the discretion of the Lead Coach:

If a young person cannot attend a session we ask that you contact the Lead Coach to inform them.If a rider does not attend for 3 consecutive weeks, without informing the Lead Coach and without a reasonable explanation, it may be assumed that they no longer wish to take part and their place may be offered to another rider. If after a prolonged absence a child would like to return to cycling they may be placed on the waiting list and given the next available place. If a rider’s attendance across a block is poor, without informing the Lead Coach and without reasonable explanation, we will contact you to determine whether they/you wish to continue and reserve the right to reassign their place. It is understood that young people are involved in activities which may on occasion clash with our regular sessions. We appreciate your support in keeping on top of non- attendance and club membership.

We publish a handbook for all members of DTCC Youths. To request a copy, please contact us via the DTCC website.
